Happy Earth day!!!! Today (and hopefully most days) is the day we celebrate the place we call home, that sheltered our ancestors and the place that hopefully will be the home to our kids, grandkids and later generations.

Fun fact, did you know that back in the 60’s and 70’s the word “Environment” was a word that appeared more often in spelling bees than on the news or even taught at school! Not only that but air pollution was widely accepted. Until Earth day was born in 1970.

In recent years we have heard more of the effects of global warming, deforestation, pollution, etc, and how humans have (unknowingly) contributed to a lot of what is happening now. Thankfully there is more awareness and institutions that work hard to educate and facilitate resources to the public because the more we learn, the better we can make decisions and act wisely.

So the 3 words to remember, not just today but hopefully everyday: REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE!!! Learn more here.

For instance, why overusing paper plates and plastic utensils?? I see this so often in many families (specially in the summer season with all the bbq’ing and such). People always look for the easiest way out, no dishes to clean, great! but do you realize how much trash you are sending to the landfill (that it is pretty much filling up quite fast!)

Let’s celebrate  Earth’s day by spreading the word and try to incorporate some of these tips in our lives.

  1. Be conscious about recycling – minimizes trash and  re-purposes the materials
  2. Fix those leaky faucets – not only saves on water, but also your bill
  3. Find a carpool option for work, or take public transportation, bike to work.
  4. Have sensor light-switches at home, or get in the habit of switching off unnecessary lights at home.
  5. Give up bottled water – get a filtered system
  6. Buy local – support local farmers market
  7. Reduce the use of paper/plastic plates and utensils
  8. Get in the habit of composting
  9. Go paperless – specially when it comes to bank statements and junk mail. Get online statements, bills. You can call you local advertisers to stop sending you ads.
  10. At work, have some utensils and a cup
  11. Use a reusable coffee mug when it hits coffee time at work. Or bring your travel mug to your favorite coffee place
  12. Organize a community clean up
  13. Plant a tree
  14. Grow your own veggies – tomatoes are the easiest
  15. Reuse bags at the grocery store. Seriously guys, not every item has to be in a bag!
  16. Avoid using chemical cleaning supplies – check here for ideas
  17. Get off of staring at the screen, your cellphone, iPad, computer, TV.
  18. Teach the kids at home the importance of being environmentally conscious of our footprint on earth. Someday they will thank you!
  19. GET OUTSIDE! enjoy nature, appreciate what we have around us. So many amazing places to explore, go for a hike, have a picnic,
  20. Hug a tree – this one sounds woo woo and silly, but celebrate nature! Not only that but trees are also living species and they will recharge you with energy 😉
